Power Restoration Continues After Winter Storm
Fredericksburg, Va. - Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) worked through the night to restore service to most members who lost power during yesterday's winter storm. As of 10 a.m., fewer than 400 members remained without power - down from a peak of more than 4,000 outages last night.
The ground was already saturated before the storm, and heavy wet snow, sleet and freezing rain caused numerous trees to topple onto power lines. Power outages occurred mainly in Caroline, Hanover, Louisa, Orange and Spotsylvania counties.
REC crews this morning were joined by contractors and crews from out-of-state cooperatives providing mutual assistance. They will continue their work today until all outages have been restored.
Safety is always the top priority for our employees and member-owners. Downed power lines and trees touching the lines are extremely dangerous. If you see a downed line, report it by contacting REC or 911 and be sure to keep others away from the line.
REC provides electric service to over 169,000 connections in parts of 22 Virginia counties. With its general office in Fredericksburg, Va., the Cooperative operates and maintains more than 17,000 miles of power lines through its service area, which ranges from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
