Tuckahoe, A National Historic Landmark, was settled by Thomas Randolph in the early 18th century. His son, William Randolph began construction of the Main House in 1733. It is the only Randolph home still standing on its original foundation. The site offers what has been called one of the most, if not the most historically intact Plantation grounds in North America, as the many outbuildings on the grounds (including the old kitchen and several quarters for enslaved people) are also the original structures on their original foundations. Tuckahoe was the childhood home of Thomas Jefferson, and a little one room schoolhouse just east of the main house is where the author of our independence learned to read and write.
