    Event Description:
History is Big Business in Virginia
    By Will Glasco

Tourism and the re-use of historic buildings are major economic drivers in the Commonwealth. Preservation Virginia, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, recently conducted three economic impact studies focusing on heritage tourism, the main street program, and the historic rehabilitation tax credit. All demonstrated that history is a moneymaker for Virginia, and not just in major cities. $7.7 billion is spent by heritage tourists each year, and the historic tax credit program returns $3 for every $1 invested by the state.

Preservation Virginia began in 1889 as a property-owning organization, with a mission of purchasing endangered historic sites. We continue to own and operate properties as museums, including Historic Jamestowne, site of the 1607 English fort, Scotchtown, home of Founding Father Patrick Henry, and several others. In addition, a major part of our mission is advocating for programs like the historic rehabilitation tax credit, as it both preserves unique historic sites while benefiting local economies.

Will Glasco was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, attending Atlee High School in Hanover County. Growing up in such a historic region, he became interested in Virginia history and culture at a young age after visiting Civil War Battlefields and Virginia Indian Reservations. He learned the value of hard work at his family’s business, Transit Lumber, and attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. After graduation in 2008 with a degree in Creative Writing, he found employment at the American Civil War Museum in both the Education and Development Departments. In 2014, he was brought on by Preservation Virginia to lead its Development program, where he works to save unique historic places across the Commonwealth.
