It was over 90 degrees one hot July morning when Dennis Harden and his two sons worked on an excavation project. After a quick break, Dennis was short of breath and his heart was beating too fast.
“I thought it was just the heat,” he said. “But it got worse.”
Dennis was rushed to Bon Secours Short Pump Emergency Center and later transferred to Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. His heart stopped twice, but doctors revived him and implanted stents.
While they worked to save his life, Dennis’s daughter was just getting the scary news about her father. She immediately left to be with her father at the hospital.
“My daughter, Shannon, lives in Texas,” Dennis shared. “She drove straight here.”
Thanks to the generosity of community partners, Dennis’ family was able to stay by his side the whole time, which brought Dennis comfort and gave his family extra peace of mind.
“The Reinhart Guest House offered Shannon a room and she was able to stay a few days while I was in the hospital,” explained Dennis.
The Evelyn D. Reinhart Guest House provides a home away from home for out-of-town caregivers and families of St. Mary’s Hospital patients. With 16 guest rooms and comfortable common areas, it provides lodging and a place where people can rest and recharge while being just a quick walk away from their loved one in the hospital. “It’s so great that my daughter had a place to stay nearby and nobody had to worry about it.”
